Little Nora Brown plays the banjo

Date: October 3, 2017
Time: 8-9:30

Little Nora Brown plays banjo, fiddle, ukulele, and accordion –  She started learning at age 6 from the late Shlomo Pestcoe.  With a focus on old time music he laid a foundation of love of music and the community it creates.  He instilled in her the lesson that music is meant to be shared.  Now 12 years old, Nora plays and sings with many of her old time mentors including harmonica master Trip Henderson under the band name Tin + Bone.  Today,  Nora is being mentored by many of her favorite old time musicians including John Cohen, Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Mark Schatz, Mark Simos, KC Groves, and Stephanie Coleman.   Recently she won the blue ribbon in the youth banjo competition at the 2017 Clifftop Appalachian String  Band Music Festival in West Virginia and 2nd place in the banjo competition (all ages) at the Oldtone Roots Music Festival in Hillsdale, NY.  Most recently she took a trip to Eastern Kentucky to visit with 89 year old master banjo player and former coal miner Lee Sexton.
Nora plays traditional old-time music including murder ballads with a focus on eastern Kentucky style claw hammer banjo picking.
